A place to explore real experiences from learners who’ve studied with us.
If you’re considering a course, it can be helpful to see how others have approached learning, how they’ve fit it around life, what the experience has been like, and what they’ve taken from it.
Hear from our learners talking about their experience in their own words.

Understanding Autism Learner
Q&A
What made you choose this course in particular?
Family members who were waiting for a diagnosis. I wanted to understand what they were going through.
What did studying the course actually look like for you on a weekly basis?
I broke up the modules into manageable chunks and set aside the time to study. I let people know what I was doing so that they didn’t disturb me.
How confident did you feel at the start of the course compared to the end?
I felt a little confident in my ability to study for the course but not very confident about the content. Once I started, my confidence grew as the feedback from my tutor was good and easy to implement.
What kind of support did you receive while studying, and how did it help you?
My tutor gave good feedback which I found helpful and I was able to make the necessary changes to my work.
What would you say to someone who worries they’re “not clever enough” or “not academic”?
I would say that you will be well supported by your tutor and student support, and that you can do anything you put your mind to. Have self belief and talk to someone involved in the process about your worries to get some reassurance.
What did you gain from completing the course?
A greater understanding of autism as well as pride in myself for completing the course.

Counselling Skills Learner
Q&A
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Retired solicitor. My wife and I are enjoying our hard earned retirement.
What was going on in your life that made you look into learning Counselling Skills?
I am a sober alcoholic, having taken my last drink 42 years ago. I am a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and try to help other still suffering alcoholics. I was aware that my listening skills could be improved.
Before enrolling, did you have any worries/doubts?
I thought it would be boring and that there was not much that I could learn after working as a solicitor and counselling, helping and sharing with other alcoholics for 42 years, but decided to give it a try.
How did you find the content and assignments?
Very interesting and I really enjoyed it and learnt a lot. The assignments made one think and I received lots of good feedback from the tutor.
Did learning Counselling Skills teach you anything about yourself?
That my listening skills improved and I learnt to embrace silent moments as a tool of counselling rather than feel uneasy.
Were you able to put the skills you learned into practice?
Yes, many times. I attend Exeter prison regularly and conduct AA meetings for the inmates.
