Do you work or live with anyone who has Autism? Tell us about them...

I often work with students and young people on the spectrum. They are either on work placement or a short skills course in the theatre. I engage in differential teaching and set this at different levels according to their understanding. Most of all I want those with a diagnosis or showing classic symptoms of to feel just as integrated into the theatre as anyone else.

My granddaughter has autism and I want to help her as much as I can as she reaches her teenage years.

Has the course helped you further understand autism?

Yes, there are so many things I didn’t realise from Acts of Parliament signs and symptoms, and recognising levels on the spectrum.

What made you enrol on to the course?

I needed to know more about how autism affects people and how I can adapt my teaching style so that good learning always takes place. I want to be able to confidently talk about autism, its characteristics and effects, and how to help in the best way.

Since starting the course, have you used the knowledge gained to overcome any challenges?

Yes, I have had better conversations with my granddaughter who was diagnosed 18 months ago communication has been difficult with her but I am now making good progress. My teaching has become more differential making sure no one is disadvantaged by disability
