Tell us a bit about yourself...

My name is Gemma and I’m a teacher, I am currently working in a primary school as a key stage 1 teacher and I have been working throughout the primary sector for over 12 years.

What course did you complete?

I decided to do the Level 2 Special Education Needs and Disability course because I wanted to take on a SEN role in my setting.

What has the course enabled you to do?

Since doing the training and receiving my certificate, I have taken on the SEN assistant role, and I’m looking to build on this further in the next year and become the lead SEN in my setting.

The knowledge that I gained from my course was a better understanding of educational needs and how to take an individualised approach in school and make that fit for our children. For example, quality-first teaching strategies.

Since the training, I have used the knowledge to overcome challenges for an autistic child in our setting, creating sensory bags, which has helped deal with the overload of every day, It’s also ensured they joined in more, which is fantastic to see them being included and having a great time!

The course helped me in the interview for the SEN role, and it’s given me a deeper understanding of SEN needs and disability in general, it also gave me lots of practical advice and helped me reflect on past experiences and things I could do differently in the future.

What’s the best thing about online learning?

The best thing for me about online learning was the flexibility, that approach enabled me to work around my children and do it in my own time.

Would you recommend this course?

I would recommend this course to other professionals who work with young children because it has given me a good overview of special education needs and disabilities and how best to support children and their families moving forward. Also, the tutors’ feedback and support was invaluable, I learned lots of knowledge, and they gave me lots of tips as well as their own practical advice and how they use the course in their profession.
