  • The term “bank holiday” originated from the practice of banks closing on these days, which allowed bank employees to have a day off.
  • The first official bank holiday in England was on August 5th, 1871.
  • The August bank holiday was introduced to give workers a break during summer.
  • The Spring Bank Holiday, also known as the Late May Bank Holiday, was created to celebrate the Whitsun holiday based on the Christian festival of Pentecost.
  • The Early May Bank Holiday was introduced in 1978 and was originally intended to be a day for workers to campaign for better working conditions.
