5 Steps To Mental Wellbeing

Boost your mental health and overall wellbeing

5 steps to mental wellbeing

The NHS recommends the following five practices to help boost your mental health and overall wellbeing:

1. Connecting with others

Good relationships are key to your mental wellbeing, you can share positive experiences, provide emotional support and support others. Here are some tips on how you can connect with others:

  • Try and take time each day to see your family, it may be a good idea to arrange a fixed time to see them for a cup of tea!
  • If you haven’t seen any friends in a while, why not get in touch and arrange a catch-up!
  • You can try volunteering either at a local school, animal rescue center, hospital or community group.

2. Exercise

Research has demonstrated that engaging in regular physical activity not only contributes to a healthier body but can also have a positive impact on mental wellbeing by boosting your sense of self-worth. You don’t have to run a marathon every day, but you can try the below:

  • Go for a walk
  • Go cycling
  • Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your daily routine

3. Learn something new

Studies have indicated that gaining additional knowledge can be beneficial for your mental health by increasing a sense of self-worth and self-assurance. No matter how busy life may be, there are still many opportunities to learn and grow. Consider:

4. Be Kind

Studies indicate that engaging in generous acts of kindness can be beneficial for your mental health, generating positive emotions and a sense of reward, which in turn can lead to a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth.

  • Take the opportunity to be with those close to you who could use some extra care or companionship.
  • If you know of anyone who’s undertaking a project, why not see if you can lend them a hand?
  • You can try volunteering in your community.

5. Practice Mindfulness

Staying conscious of the current moment can enhance your psychological health.

This involves being mindful of your emotions, physical sensations, and environment. This practice, sometimes referred to as mindfulness, can help you to appreciate life more and have a better understanding of yourself. It can also have a positive effect on how you approach life and the difficulties you encounter.
